November 16, 2007 (Chicago): Time to celebrate the first innovation that has eventually led to 24-hour banking. Just three generations ago, all transactions were done at teller windows, and occurred before 3 p.m. Now we can take care of our financial transactions at ATMs, going online
or at a drive-up window. The first such drive-through banking
facility opened this week in 1946 — at the Exchange National Bank in
Chicago, which offered its motoring customers 10 teller windows with
sliding drawers.
Now, there are more than 92,000 financial offices
in the United States most of which provide drive-up tellers, ATMs and Internet access. That's 79,000 commercial bank branches and over 13,000
branches at other savings institutions. Altogether, these offices hold assets of nearly $11
trillion.
